Highlights included: Holy Wave, White Fence, Tame Impala, Ryley Walker, Mystic Braves, The Jesus and Mary Chain, Paperhead, The GOASTT, Fuzz, and, of course, The 13th Floor Elevators. It was 3 days packed full of great music. I hope you enjoy the highlight video that I put together, and maybe I’ll see you at the Fest next year!

DJ Mellow Yellow Goes To Austin – The 13th Floor Elevators at Austin Psych Fest 2015

DJ Mellow Yellow recently trekked to Austin, TX for Austin Psych Fest Presents Levitation 2015 (that’s a mouthful). He got the chance to see a ton of incredible bands play, but the highlight of the weekend was The 13th Floor Elevators 50th Anniversary Concert. The concert started off a little shaky, and it took the group a few songs to find their groove but that didn’t take away from the enormity of seeing the Elevators reunited for the first time in decades. It was an incredible experience and one that Mellow Yellow won’t soon forget. Presented for you here is The 13th Floor Elevators’ encore performance of the psychedelic classic “You’re Gonna Miss Me.” Best viewed in HD and with popcorn.

Lineup: Roky Erickson on lead vocals and guitar, Tommy Hall on electric jug, John Ike Walton on drums, Ronnie Leatherman on bass, taking the place of deceased Stacy Sutherland on guitar were Fred Mitchim and Eli Southard, and Roky’s son, Jegar, was on harmonica.

The Imagery of Psych: The Photos, Album Covers and Artwork That Defined an Era

imageryofpsych.jpg

Our Long Conversation during our September 11th show centered on the Imagery of Psychedelia. Psychedelia is such a sensory-based experience covering virtually every one of the five senses. We mostly focus on the Hearing aspect on the Psychedelic Experience, but the visual aspect of Psychedelia is an important one. During our show, we always have a lava lamp burning, and when we are at our homes having our own personal listening experiences, the lights are usually set low and the lava lamps are glowing there, as well. We have posters adorning our walls, and we are usually perusing the liner notes on the albums. We even try to incorporate a visual element with our show with our “Fauxtoshopped” (it’s really all done in Paint) posters for each episode. While the aural experience is our primary focus, the visual experience goes hand in hand with it.

Our favorite form of psychedelic imagery is, obviously, album artwork, but when talking about the imagery of psychedelia one cannot forget other forms like photography. Whether it’s concerts, festivals or even moments of the counterculture protests captured on film, some of the most iconic images of the 1960’s were captured by cameras. Concert posters were another incredible form of psychedelic artwork. Below are some of our favorite images. Feel free to comment on ours or share your own favorites.
